Andrew McCandless, Principal Trumpet with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Sun Valley Summer Symphony, is among Canada’s leading classical music educators. Leveraging his vast experience in the orchestral world, Andrew holds the position of Brass Coordinator at the reputable Glen Gould School, is on staff at the Royal Conservatory of Music, and teaches several students privately each year. From 2004 to 2006, Andrew was also on the Trumpet Faculty with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.
Andrew has been invited to run several Masterclasses across North America. His teaching style in these intimate learning sessions is known for making classical music repertoire fun and easy to comprehend for his students. To date, Andrew has held Masterclasses at the Eastman School of Music, the Universities of Toronto and Calgary, Truman State University, the New World Symphony, as well as many state Universities including Buffalo, Missouri, Kansas, Louisville, Miami and Texas.
Andrew began playing the trumpet at the age of nine while studying at the Youth Performing Arts School in his native Louisville, Kentucky. He continued his studies at Boston University and the Eastman School of Music. As a junior in college, Andrew began playing with the Savannah Symphony as Co-Principal Trumpet. Andrew serves as Co-Chair of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra Committee, and participates in the organization’s numerous education programmes. Andrew is a Yamaha performing artist.
